  • Counselors are bound by strict confidentiality standards to protect the privacy of their clients. Everything you share with a counselor stays in session.

However, there are important limitations to confidentiality that clients should be aware of. If a counselor learns of potential abuse or neglect, particularly involving minors or individuals aged 65 or older, they are legally required to report this to the appropriate authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of those vulnerable individuals.

Additionally, if a client expresses intent to harm themselves or others, the counselor is obligated to take necessary steps to prevent harm, which may involve disclosing this information to relevant parties, such as emergency services or emergency contacts.

While confidentiality is a cornerstone of the counseling relationship, these exceptions are in place to protect clients and others from serious harm.

I make it a priority to be collaborative and work together with clients, always prioritizing safety, including creating safety plans when needed.

  • Private pay counseling services offer the following key benefits that can enhance the therapeutic experience:

    • Greater Privacy: Since no insurance claims are filed, your mental health records remain fully confidential and are not shared with third-party providers. This is especially beneficial if you are covered under a parent or partner’s insurance plan, as private pay protects your privacy and ensures that your therapy remains entirely between you and your counselor.

    • More Flexibility: Private pay allows for greater choice in the type of therapy, length of sessions, and frequency of visits without the restrictions set by insurance companies.

    • No Diagnosis Required: Unlike insurance-based services, private pay does not require a formal mental health diagnosis to receive care, reducing stigma and allowing support for personal growth, life transitions, or stress management.

    • Tailored Care: Therapists have the freedom to fully customize treatment plans based on your unique needs without being limited by insurance guidelines.

    • Quicker Access: Clients often experience shorter wait times and can begin therapy sooner, as there are fewer administrative barriers.
